Ramirez played in his native Cuba until 2007 when he left for the Dominican Republic.  He had an outstanding league and international career in his homeland, winning an Olympic gold medal in 2004 among many other accomplishments.  He holds the Major League record for grand slams by a rookie with 4 in 2008.

The political future of Cuba has broad implications for the future of the sport.  Cuba is, without a doubt, one of the great baseball cultures of the world with scores of Major League-ready players among its citizenry.  If that economy ever opens up - and who knows what's in store for that island nation - the impact on American baseball will be immediate.
